My name is Mary (Mary Frances if my mom is around), and I'm a web developer and designer in Richmond, Va. I spent most of my college career at James Madison University ('08) thinking I wanted to be a journalist. I was wrong. As editor-in-chief of my college newspaper, part of my job entailed page design, and it turned out I much preferred visual story telling to writing. I spent the last year of college cramming in as many design-related projects as I could and taking as many design classes as I was able. My unique set of skills left me primed for an internship at the Roanoke Times as page design intern, where I learned the real meaning of a deadline. Also, how to be nocturnal.
After my internship, I spent the time in between searching for jobs teaching myself a lot of stuff - HTML, CSS and Javascript, and began figuring out WordPress. I found full-time work with the athletic department at Virginia Tech, where I have been for the past three years. I work with some really talented folks to help Virginia Tech transition into the digital design age, and most recently lead the redesign team for hokiesports.com. I also spend a lot of time watching Hokie football.
I recently moved to Richmond, VA, where I'm designing and developing websites and learning the latest and greatest stuff, like responsive design, HTML5 and CSS3. (Not Flash. Never Flash. In fact, if you're reading this and you still think building anything in Flash is a good idea, please call me. I will help you.)
In my free time, I hike, ride my bike and hang out with my bagle rescue (that's a beagle/basset hound, for those not familiar with the esteemed breed).
